Nutrify vs MyFitnessPal
Which is better, what each costs, what you keep if you switch, and where MyFitnessPal beats us. We checked all of it in September 2026.
Is Nutrify better than MyFitnessPal?
For some things, and this is our own site so weigh it accordingly. Nutrify is ahead on AI photo logging, voice logging, barcode scanner, micronutrient tracking, intermittent fasting, meal planning, no ads. MyFitnessPal remains the better choice for users who prefer manual entry.
How much does Nutrify cost compared to MyFitnessPal?
Nutrify is $34.99 a year, $12.99 a month, or $99 once for lifetime. MyFitnessPal is $79.99 a year, which is 2.3× what we charge. Every Nutrify feature is open during the free trial and there is no second tier above it.
Can I switch from MyFitnessPal to Nutrify without losing my data?
Partly, and the honest answer matters here. Your weight history and workouts come across through Apple Health or Health Connect, because both apps read and write the platform. Your food diary does not. No tracker in this category can import another's, Nutrify included. Saved foods rebuild in about a week of normal logging. Before you uninstall MyFitnessPal, check it has been syncing weight to the platform, and take the CSV export while you still can.

MyFitnessPal: the pitch and the reports
A feature table only tells you what an app ships. This is what MyFitnessPal says about itself, and what people say after living with it.
What MyFitnessPal says
- The default calorie counter, on the strength of a 20M+ item food database
- Meal Scan AI photo logging, built with Passio
- Twenty years of history and the widest third-party integration list in the category
What users praise
- The database genuinely does have the obscure product you scanned
- Integrations with almost everything, including direct Garmin and Fitbit
- Long history means most people already have years of data in it
What users complain about
- Barcode scanning moved behind Premium in 2026, after fourteen years free. Users on MyFitnessPal's own community forum asked whether it was "serious locked behind a pay wall"
- Ads on the free tier
- Much of the 20M database is user-submitted, so entries for the same food disagree with each other
Where the pitch and the reports pull apart
MyFitnessPal is marketed as the accessible default, and in 2026 its free tier lost the single feature most people opened it for. The pitch and the product moved in opposite directions.
What independent research found
Researchers entered 43 three-day food records from Canadian endurance athletes into MyFitnessPal and compared the output against ESHA Food Processor using the Canadian Nutrient File as the reference. MyFitnessPal showed poor validity for total energy, carbohydrates, protein, cholesterol, sugar and fibre. Two raters entering the same records also produced different totals for energy and carbohydrates, though the gap was too small to matter clinically. One study, one population, one country’s food database, so read it as evidence rather than a verdict.
Morello et al., Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, October 2025Our read
The database is bigger than ours and will beat us on an obscure packaged product. The trade is that its free tier now asks you to search and type every meal, and its AI sits on an $79.99 tier with a $99.99 tier above that.

Why Users Switch from MyFitnessPal to Nutrify
1. Effortless Tracking Saves Time
A photo is one action. Searching a database for a home-cooked meal is a query, a scroll, a judgement call between near-identical entries and a portion guess, repeated for every component on the plate. We have not run a controlled timing study, so we are not going to quote you a number - the saving is in the number of decisions, not in seconds we invented.
2. More Accurate Nutritional Data
Manual entry hides its guesswork: picking "1 cup, cooked" from a list is still an estimate, it just looks precise. Nutrify estimates from the actual plate and shows you the per-ingredient breakdown it used, so the guess is visible and you can correct the line that is wrong.
3. Better User Experience
A clean, modern interface without ads or clutter makes tracking enjoyable rather than a chore. Users are more likely to stick with their goals when the app is pleasant to use.
4. Better Value for Money
At $19.99/month, MyFitnessPal is one of the most expensive options. Nutrify offers competitive pricing with more features, including AI photo recognition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch from MyFitnessPal to Nutrify easily?
Yes! Nutrify is designed to be intuitive from day one. You can start tracking immediately with photo recognition - no need to learn complicated database systems or build custom food lists.
Will I lose my data if I switch?
Your food diary does not transfer - MyFitnessPal does not share logged entries with other apps, and no tracker in this category can import them. Your weight history and workouts do carry over, because both apps read and write Apple Health on iOS and Health Connect on Android. Saved foods and favourites have to be rebuilt, which in practice takes about a week of normal logging.
Is Nutrify's AI photo recognition really that accurate?
Yes! Our AI achieves high accuracy through sophisticated algorithms and continuous learning. You can always review and adjust the results if needed. Many users find it more accurate than manually guessing portion sizes.
How long is the free trial?
Nutrify offers a 7-day free trial with full access to all premium features. That is plenty of time to test the AI photo recognition and see if it's right for you, and you can cancel any time before the trial ends.
