Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) are highly reactive species formed from the reduction of oxygen. They are part of the group of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and result from processes such as ionizing radiation and certain biochemical reactions. Because of their reactivity, they can damage DNA, proteins, and lipids in living organisms.
