Definition

The rectus abdominis is a pair of long, flat muscles that extend vertically along the entire length of the abdomen and are commonly referred to as the 'abs'. It is responsible for flexing the spinal column and is visible when a person has a well-defined core.

The rectus abdominis muscle is a long muscle of the anterior abdominal wall, originating from the pubic symphysis and pubic crest and inserting into the xiphoid process and the 5th to 7th costal cartilages of the ribs. It is enclosed in the rectus sheath and is separated by the linea alba at the midline. Its primary functions include assisting in the flexion of the lumbar spine, stabilizing the pelvis during walking, and helping to increase intra-abdominal pressure.
