MCT Oil (Medium-Chain Triglycerides)
Definition
MCT oil is a supplement made up of medium-chain triglycerides, which are fats that are easily absorbed and used as a source of energy in the body.
Scientific / Technical Definition
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are triglycerides with two or three fatty acids having an aliphatic tail of 6–12 carbon atoms. MCTs are digestible fats often extracted from coconut oil, palm oil, or dairy fat. They are rapidly metabolized due to their shorter chain length, which allows them to be absorbed more efficiently in the gut and oxidized quickly by the liver to produce ketones, providing a fast energy source.
